Kirsten has been involved in various aspects of the entertainment industry for over 25 years. She began her career as a touring and session singer/saxophonist and gradually evolved into a composer with a CD, “Bridging the Gap” and two full-length rock operas, “Alice in Modernland” and “The Bird and the Waterfall to her credit. “ Alice in Modernland” was workshopped in New York and subsequently mounted at Sledgehammer Theatre in San Diego with Kirsten Brandt as director. “The Bird and the Waterfall” was workshopped in Vancouver and filmed as a means of promotion to both film and theatrical companies. The proceeds of that workshop were forwarded to Penny Thloloe to help begin Kasi Ballet Theatre.
Kirsten is also a painter and sculptor and more recently, along with her partner, William Park, a philanthropist.
William Park is a real estate developer in both Canada and the United States, with an extensive background in commercial finance. His business and personal interests are varied, and both he and Kirsten and their children have been very pleased and honoured to be able to give support to Penny Thloloe and Kasi Ballet Theatre.
“When I first read one of Stephanie Nolen’s articles about Penny in the Canadian Globe and Mail, I wanted to help…when I read the second in a local magazine, I knew I had to help…by the time I saw the third article, with an email address, it was only seconds before I contacted Penny and asked “How can I help?”
So many people think the situation in South Africa and in so many places like it is hopeless…there is so much poverty, corruption…so many shattered souls…where do we begin? We begin with listening to our hearts…the rest follows. I think it was Ghandi who said something like “If you put a big man and a mosquito in the same dark room for a night, the mosquito will usually win.” When it comes to raising awareness in the world that there are people like Penny Thloloe who are dedicated to bettering the human condition they have been born into, who are passionate, talented and giving of themselves, then I don’t mind being that mosquito if it helps her in her mission of inspiring and encouraging the youth of Alexandra to dream. What we can imagine, we can achieve.”
